If you live in Naperville, Lombard or Bolingbrook, water hardness is doing more damage to your appliances than anything else on this list, and it does it slowly enough that nobody notices until something stops.
What scale actually is
Dissolved calcium and magnesium come out of solution when water is heated, and they deposit on the hottest surface available. In an appliance that surface is the heating element, which is exactly the component you least want insulated.
Where it shows up first
- The dishwasher. The film on glassware that people blame on detergent is usually scale. The heating element then works harder to reach temperature, runs hotter and fails earlier.
- The ice maker. Output drops long before it stops. A saturated filter and a scaled fill valve together will halve production without any visible symptom.
- The washer. Less dramatic, but scale on the element and in the hoses reduces efficiency and traps detergent residue that ends up on your clothes.
- The water heater. Not an appliance we repair, but worth saying: scale on the bottom of a tank is why a heater that used to give twenty minutes of hot water now gives eight.
What actually helps
Change the water filter on schedule. Six months is the interval for most refrigerators, and on hard water it should not be stretched. It is the single highest-value thing on this page.
Use a rinse aid in the dishwasher. It is not a gimmick. It changes how water sheets off the dishes and it measurably reduces deposits.
Descale periodically. A citric acid cycle in an empty dishwasher every few months removes what has built up before it becomes permanent.
Consider a softener if you are in the hardest part of the county. It pays for itself across every appliance in the house rather than just one.
What does not help
More detergent. Scale is not a cleaning problem, and adding detergent to a machine that cannot reach temperature just leaves more residue behind.
