A front-loader locks its door for the whole cycle and releases it a minute or two after the drum stops. When it does not release, the order you do things in matters.
First, wait
Many machines hold the lock for up to three minutes after the end of a cycle, and longer if the water inside is still hot. Give it five minutes before deciding anything is wrong.
Then, cut the power
Switch the machine off at the wall for a full minute and switch it back on. A lock held by a confused control very often releases on the next power-up.
Then, drain it. Before anything else
If there is water visible in the drum, do not attempt to open the door and do not pull the emergency release yet. Most front-loaders have a small access panel at the bottom front. Behind it is a filter with a short drain hose beside it. Put a shallow tray and towels down, pull the hose out, remove its cap and let the water out, refitting the cap when the tray fills. It takes several rounds. Only then unscrew the filter itself.
Skipping this step is how people end up with several gallons across a laundry floor, and in a condo that becomes the neighbour’s ceiling.
Then, the emergency release
With the drum empty, the release is safe to use. It is usually a small tab or loop behind that same access panel. Pull it gently and steadily.
Why it locked in the first place
Once the door is open the underlying fault still needs attention. The common causes are a failed lock assembly, a drain blockage that left the machine unable to finish the cycle, or a control that lost track partway through. A machine that stopped with water in it usually has a drain problem, and the filter you have just cleaned may have been the whole story.
What not to do
Do not lever the door with a screwdriver. The latch and the door hook are plastic, they break easily, and the replacement costs many times the lock switch that was the original fault.
